The Way You Do One Thing Is How You Do Everything

This is one of my good friend’s favorite sayings.

The way you do one thing is how you do everything.

It means that all areas of your life of interconnected in some disparate way.

If you speak kindly to yourself in one area of your life, you’ll do it in other areas of life.

If you are hard on yourself about something, it means that you will be hard on yourself in ways you probably don’t even realize.

Take notice of how you speak to yourself, and how you perform your daily tasks.

These habits will slowly build and create your reality.

For example, the way you make your bed might seem inconsequential, but it will spillover into the next task you do that day.

If you rush to make your bed, then you’re going to rush to get your coffee.

Then, you’re going to rush to work, and rush to get through your emails first thing in the morning.

Before you know it, it’s lunchtime and you’re still rushing to get things done.

Is that really the optimal pace for you to be working at?

What if you were simply more intentional about everything you did?

What if you simply paused for a moment before jumping from one thing to the next?

What if you intentionally slowed yourself down every single morning and focused on making your bed as slowly and as perfectly as you possibly could?

Do you think the rest of your day might be a little different?

I know it seems inconsequential but there is entire process on exactly how to make your bed in the US Military, so clearly there is merit to it.

I think everything that we do is an opportunity to prove ourselves, day-in and day-out.

Everything is an opportunity to build better habits.

Everything is an opportunity to stack up little victories each day.

If you make a perfect bed first thing in the morning, that’s your first little victory of the day.

It sets the tone for the rest of your day.

I don’t make my bed perfectly every day, but I do notice that if I’m rushing to get it done and do a real sloppy job, it tends to be a common state that I operate in the rest of the day.

When I have a slow morning where I really sit in stillness and truly enjoy my morning cup of coffee with complete gratitude, I tend to be more intentional with everything else I do that day.

 I don’t think that’s an accident.

We are constantly creating our state-of-mind with everything we do.

That’s why it’s so important to speak kindly to ourselves, and to perform our daily tasks and rituals with intentionality.

Focusing on the little things, and doing them as well as we possibly can, sends a message to the universe that we can be trusted with more.

Doing the little things right means we will do the big things right.
